TUTORIAL: CAPTURING TO YOUR AVID
Tutorial: Capturing to Your Avid
For many editors, the process of capturing is overlooked because although we edit
almost every day, capturing is a prelude to that process. I’ve even heard from new edi-
tors who claim that they cannot capture—it’s too technical. Actually, you get used to
all the bells and whistles of the Capture tool. Over time, you recognize all the settings
and the problems that they cause. As a result, proficiency on the Capture tool will be
gained through time and experience. If you can use the Capture functions efficiently,
you will have more time to edit. Isn’t that the whole idea of modern day nonlinear
tools? Try out some of the options and see which best fits your workflow.
Now that you’ve learned how to capture, we’ll begin a short tutorial and go
over it again. This particular tutorial is a little difficult to follow because Free DV and
Xpress Pro do not have the exact same capture options. At any rate, I’ll point them out
as we go, so that you can learn to capture most efficiently.
Connecting the Peripherals
To start, you need to turn off your computer and connect all your peripherals.
Capturing with Mojo
If you have Mojo (Xpress Pro only), connect it directly to the FireWire port on your
computer using a cable with duplicate six-pin connectors. One end goes to the “Host”
connection on the back of the Mojo. The other end goes to your FireWire six-pin con-
nector on the computer. Next, you need to connect a four-pin FireWire cable to your
camera or deck and the “DV” connector on the Mojo.
If your drives are also FireWire, be sure that you connect them to a separate
FireWire card. If you try to connect both the Mojo and your drives to the same FireWire
bus, they will not work correctly.
What is a FireWire bus? When your computer has one or more internal FireWire
connections, they are said to be on the same bus. Adding an additional PCI FireWire
card adds a separate bus. Thus, you can connect Mojo to the computer bus and any
external drives to the FireWire card.
Next, turn on the deck and insert your first tape. Then boot up the computer
and start the Xpress Pro application. Jump ahead to the “Configuring the Deck or
Camera” section that follows.
Note: When using Mojo, always connect it to the computer’s built-in FireWire. This way, the computer
will recognize the Mojo first, and no additional issues will occur when using both Mojo and external FireWire
drives.
