DIGITAL CUT
your deck and play back the digital cut. In almost every case when you are using a
camera as your record deck, you use this method of recording. If you choose this
method—by far the easiest of the three—you will want plenty of black at the head and
tail of your sequence. Otherwise, the untidy crash record will be seen, which is never
good at presentations. In the case of crash recording, you can set your deck to Local
control on the Digital Cut tool and start recording as you press the Play button for the
digital cut.
Crash recording is a way to do a digital cut to a deck that is not controlled by
Xpress Pro. There can be many reasons for doing a digital cut with this method. The
most common is that not all decks are controllable by Xpress Pro. For example, VHS
decks normally have neither FireWire nor RS-422 serial controls.
Configure the Record Deck
Before performing a digital cut, make sure that your deck is connected and properly
configured.
There are two different control interfaces that can be used in deck configurations
which were discussed earlier, RS-422 (also referred to as Direct) and OHCI (IEEE
1394, or FireWire) With either of these protocols (see Figure 6.23), the communication
is two-way, and your Xpress Pro can poll the deck or camera to determine its model
and make.
After you add a channel, you can select a deck. When adding a channel, the sys-
tem asks if you want to autoconfigure the deck (see Figure 6.24), which allows the sys-
tem to determine which type of deck (name and model) that you are using. The deck
templates for an Avid system are numerous. When it finds the deck (by polling it and
determining the make and model), it loads the correct template. There are times, how-
ever, when Xpress Pro does not properly identify the deck or camera, particularly when
using OHCI. Keep in mind that there are now many decks and cameras on the market,
and although the protocols are common, the methods of implementation are not. So
the best thing to do is to go to your deck configuration settings and do it yourself.

deck—it doesn’t always work with
FireWire configurations.
