■ GLOSSARY
specially equipped camera and a telecine
with metaspeed or other speed-alteration
device.
three-point editing The principle that any edit
requires only three marks between the source
and record sides to automatically calculate
the fourth mark and thus complete the edit.
three-stripe Magnetic film stock containing
three rows of magnetic oxide coating.
TIFF Acronym for Tag Image File Format. A
graphics format.
time-base error A variation in the stability of
picture information, color information, and
video sync pulse during playback on a video-
tape recorder (VTR).
timecode A numbering system used to meas-
ure frames of video. Non–drop frame is
most commonly used on film and has a
direct number to frame correspondence,
but is not completely time-accurate due to
the actual video rate of 29.97 fps (NTSC).
Drop frame does not have a direct frame-to-
frame numbering correspondence, but it is
time-accurate.
timecode reader A machine used in telecine
that reads timecode, usually connected to a
timecode character generator that can put
timecode burn-in windows onto a transferred
videotape.
timecode window Refers to character-gener-
ated timecode numbers superimposed on
video images for reference to timecode of a
master tape.
Timeline The graphical representation of edits
made to a sequence.
tone A constant audio frequency signal
recorded at the start of a tape at 0 VU (vol-
ume units) to provide a reference for later
use. Usually recorded in conjunction with
SMPTE color bars.
track A single channel of audio or video.
tracker In motion tracking, a structure associ-
ated with a specific region of interest that
contains a single set of data points.
tracking The adjustment of video heads dur-
ing playback of a tape to ensure the strongest
possible constant signal.
tracking edit A zero-duration edit used during
transition edits (dissolves, wipes, and so forth)
on computerized linear editing systems.
track selector An interface function of select-
ing an active track in the Timeline.
TransferManager The Avid application that
allows you to transfer media from one work-
group to another.
transition Any form of edit between two pic-
tures. Can be a cut, dissolve, or other repre-
sentation of what is to take place as one
segment ends and the next one begins.
transition effect An effect that can be applied
to an edit transition.
transition play loop The loop that plays in
Avid’s Trim mode, which allows the editor to
see slightly before and slightly after a transi-
tion. Plays in a continuous loop.
trichromatic Three-color, such as RGB.
trim The process of adjusting transitions in a
sequence. Used for fine-tuning and cleaning
up sequences.
24p 24-fps progressive frames. 24p frames
are created by deinterlacing two video fields
into a single full, reconstructed frame.
25p 25-fps progressive frames. 25p frames
are created by deinterlacing two video fields
into a single full, reconstructed frame.
