A TOUR OF THE INTERFACE
Figure 3.50 Script view
The Timeline
If you’ve looked ahead in this book, you probably already know that the next chapter
is all about the Timeline. Nonetheless, in our tour of the interface, we must take a look
at the basic functions of the Timeline because it is a very powerful tool.
In some ways, it’s funny. When Avid first developed the Timeline, it did very
little. In fact, it did nothing more than graphically represent a chronology of edits made
in your current sequence, which it still does. But as the industry continued to explore
the possibilities of using the Timeline, Avid made it much more powerful than in the
early days. Now you can digitize in the Timeline, move clips, juxtapose shots, moni-
tor audio, and so much more. Let’s take a look at a typical Timeline and examine the
components that you expect to see.
Source and Record Track Indicators
The Source and Record track indicators to the left of the Timeline tell you what tracks
are available on the Source side and what tracks have been created on the Record side.
You can add more tracks on the Record side as needed. The track indicators are also
used for patching Source tracks to the Record tracks (see Figure 3.51). In other words,
you can patch a Source from audio track 2 to the Record track of audio track 1, and
so forth. I’ll show you how to do it in the next chapter.
Note: This view was created before Avid created the Script function,in which you can actually import a
text script and use it as a bin (available only on Xpress Pro).
