CHAPTER 6: IMPORTING, EXPORTING, AND DIGITAL CUT
Some people like to get fancy with their slates. I personally prefer a simple black
background with white sans serif fonts, which is readable and easy to identify. I find it
funny that some people like to advertise with their slates. Usually the only person who
sees the slate is the person creating duplicates of it at the dub house. Everyone else
tends to fast-forward through the slate to view the program.
Rendering Effects
After you complete bars, tone, and slate, you need to render all the effects in your
sequence. Mark an in point at the beginning of your sequence and an out point at the
end. Select all your tracks. Click the Digital Video toggle above the Timeline so that it
is blue. From there, select Clip
> Render In to Out. This will render all your effects.
One of the keys to shortening your render times is to render the top track only.
If any effects exist underneath the top track of effects, they will be rendered, too.
If the client is in the room when you have to render, this is a good time to catch up
on the latest office gossip. The best editors keep track of what interests their clients. If
your sequence is long and effects-laden, you’re going to have to do some serious talking.
While rendering, you might notice that the system updates you on the percentage
of effects rendered. Press T on your keyboard, and the information will shift to show
you the estimated time left before the render is complete. This number can change dras-
tically, especially if you are rendering a really big sequence of effects with multiple tracks.
Convert Audio Sample Rates
The fourth and final step in digital cut preparation is to convert audio sample rates to
the project sample rate that are established in your audio settings.
Normally with a DV project, the sampling rate is set to 48 kHz, but if you
added any CD audio (44.1 kHz) or audio from other sources, you have to convert the
sample rate.
To do this, select Bin
> Change Sample rate. A menu will appear with a pull-
down button that allows you to choose the sample rate, the quality of audio, and the
target drive in which the media is to be stored.
Three Methods of Digital Cut
Now that we’ve covered how to set up for a digital cut, let’s go through the procedure.
First, you need to determine which kind of digital cut to do. There are three different
ways to perform a digital cut:
Insert edit
Assemble edit
Crash record
Let’s take a look at each one and determine how and why they are used.
