■ THE AUDIO TOOL
Hey! My Contiguous Clips Won’t Move!
One of my first bad experiences with Timeline editing was when I was editing a commercial for a
soft drink company and we had everyone there in the room watching the spot—I mean everyone.
The client decided to move a few contiguous shots,so I turned on the ol’Timeline editing button,
Shift-clicked all the segments,and ...nothing.It wouldn’t budge.So I tried again—nothing.There
were some giggles from the back. The animation director gave me that “What the heck?”look.I
tried again—still nothing. After everyone decided to take a quick break, the creative director came
up to me and whispered some harsh words very quickly in a restrained tone.
Eventually, I found out what was wrong.A single flash frame between two segments was not
Shift-clicked. I still had my job, but from that point on,all I heard was “Check it for flash frames.”
Video Quality Previewing
Xpress Pro and Free DV have the capability to display different qualities of video in the
interface. That is to say, the quality differences that you control will show in the inter-
face but not in an NTSC or PAL display. The quality there is measured by the capture
resolution. Please make note that video previewing is used so that you can get the best
quality of video displayed while not slowing down your system, particularly with
regard to real-time effects.
Video quality is used in conjunction with the green Toggle Digital Video Out
button that was discussed previously. If the blue dot is displayed, the Video Quality
Preview button will not appear at the bottom of your Timeline. That’s because when
the toggle is set to not show real-time effects, there is no need to reduce the video
quality on your display. The preview quality button is located to the right of the Fast
menu on your Timeline. It consists of a box with a diagonal slash in the middle. Here
are some of the options available with Realtime (green dot) video selected.
Best Performance When the color of the box is yellow on yellow, you are in Best Per-
formance mode. To help you to remember, the diagonal divider between the colors is
stair-stepped or jaggy to indicate poor quality. The best performance mode reduces the
quality of the display to about
1
⁄
16
of its original quality. Why would we ever want to
do this? Strictly for better overall performance of the system. For example, if you cap-
tured media on your system drive, it could possibly cause some errors. With Best Per-
formance, those errors are minimized.
Best Quality Best Quality (yellow on green) displays the video at
1
⁄
4
of its original
quality. This is the optimum quality that can be achieved without the Mojo while you
use Real Time Effects mode.
