CHAPTER 2: CAPTURING ■
picture was there originally. If you have a good knowledge of your source material, you
might be able to figure out which parts are missing. But the precise frames will be lost
because they contain no timecode reference from the original source.
There are ways of getting around this problem. I recommend copying the source
material onto a videotape format that can be controlled by Free DV/Xpress Pro so that
you have some kind of timecoded reference in the event of accidental deletion or the
need to capture at a higher resolution. By doing this, some minimal quality of the
source might be lost, but that is far better than having to find the original source with-
out any timecode numbers to reference.
When you click the Deck tool button, its icon changes to the same icon with a
red circle and a slash through it . This is, of course, the international symbol for
“No!” When it is selected, it indicates to both you and your system that the deck has
no remote control.
The interface changes somewhat when you select no remote control. All the deck
control buttons—fast-forward, play, rewind, and so on—disappear from the bottom
left of the Capture tool. They are not needed because Free DV/Xpress Pro cannot con-
trol the deck, anyway. All deck controls have to be done manually by jockeying the
source deck rather than the Free DV/Xpress Pro interface.
When you click the deck button to indicate no remote control, you lose many of
the advanced functions of digitization and also some very basic functions that you
might need. Forewarned is forearmed! (Or something like that.) It is better to transfer
your raw media to a remote-controlled deck and/or format. Here are the consequences:
• You cannot log any footage because the deck cannot batch capture it. (Logging
and batch capture can be done only on Xpress Pro.)
• You cannot edit in low resolution and then re-create your sequence in high reso-
lution, because the deck cannot batch capture. (Again, batch capture is Xpress
Pro only.)
• Without a remote-control connection to the deck, any timecode numbers will be
insignificant because the deck has no control that would give your
FreeDV/Xpress Pro a timecode signal.
• In short, when you turn deck control off, this is good for capturing at final
resolution with no need of reference numbers. It can work for short projects,
but having no deck control is nearly impossible for long format projects with
multiple changes.
Of course, there is an exception to every rule. Feel free to send me an e-mail
about it.
