aspect frame to be displayed on videotape
or DVD.
soft wipe A wipe effect from one image to
another that has a diffused edge.
sorting The displaying of clips in a bin col-
umn in alphanumeric order of the selected
heading.
Sound Designer II (SD2) An audio file format
used for import and export of digital audio
on Macintosh-based editing systems.
source mode A method of linear auto-assembly
that determines in what order the edit con-
troller reads the edit decision list (EDL). B-
mode assemblies are generally referred to as
source mode.
sound report A report issued for each sound
roll by the sound department of a motion
picture production. Includes scene numbers,
takes, circled takes, Society of Motion Pic-
ture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) time-
code, and other information. A copy should
be sent to the editorial department.
speed The point at which playback or record-
ing reaches a stable speed and all servos are
locked.
splice An edit in which the material already
on the video or audio track is lengthened by
the addition (editing) of new material spliced
in at any point in the sequence.
split edit A type of sync edit in which transi-
tion of audio and video from a source do not
occur at the exact same time. Also called L-
cut, delay, or overlap edit.
split-screen The video special effect that dis-
plays two images separated by a horizontal
or vertical wipe line. Also a monitoring tool to
view an effect before and after it is applied
to a segment.
spot color correction A color adjustment made
to a specific part of a video image that is
identified using geometric drawing tools.
stabilization A specialized form of motion
tracking used to eliminate unwanted motion
such as camera movement from a clip. Stabi-
lization works by tracking a theoretically
unmoving object in the clip and by reposi-
tioning each frame or field of video to keep
that object stationary.
startup disk The disk that contains the operat-
ing system files. The computer needs an
operating system to run.
stepping The process of moving forward or
backward through media one frame at a
time. Also called jogging.
storyboard A series of pictures (traditionally
sketches) designed to show the look and
order of events of a production.
streaming A technology that allows users to
watch a video transmission, usually over the
Internet.
striped stock Blacked and timecoded videotape
stock.
subcarrier (SC) The sine wave signal used for
color reference.
subclip A subsection or smaller part of a clip
or sequence, created for easier reference. Sub-
clips are made and categorized to prevent long
searches across entire reels of tape or long
media clips. As a metadata in a bin, it points
to only part of a Master clip.
subsampling (chroma) A method of reducing
data within image files for transmission, usu-
ally to videotape. Subsampling is represented
by a ratio of three or four digits, where the
leading digit, usually 4, is representative only
as a luminance sample relative to the amount
