CHAPTER 3: BASIC EDITING ■
On Free DV, you can have two video tracks and two audio tracks. It might not
seem like much, but you can do a lot with it. Most documentaries need little more.
Xpress Pro will allow 24 tracks of audio and 24 tracks of video. Why so many tracks?
It depends upon the complexity of the sequence. For films, I use a maximum of four
video tracks and rarely more than eight tracks of audio. But I have to admit that it’s
nice to know that I have more than I need. If you’re doing an effects-laden sequence,
you need all the video tracks you can get.
When the track indicators are active, they light up. In Free DV, they change from
gray to silver. Try clicking one of the indicators and you’ll see. In Xpress Pro, the tracks
normally change from silver to purple when active. The track indicators have even more
have more capabilities that we’ll discuss in the next chapter.
Buttons
The buttons in the Timeline (shown in Figure 3.52) offer more functions at the click of
a mouse. There are 16 buttons at the top of the Timeline. Let’s take a moment to
examine these functions.
