to tell you this. The ability to dynamically trim media and view it as the trimming

takes place makes trimming simple and precise. Using this method, you can trim and

maintain continuity all at the same time, adjust your trimming to maintain continuing

action between cuts, establish a proper eyeline between characters, adjust for camera

movement, establish audio cues, and so on.

The best thing about trimming on the fly is that both screens (A side and B side)

update as you roll through. So if you are trying to line up an event, an eyeline, or any-

thing that gives continuity to the scene, you can roll through with J-K and K-L combi-

nations and watch both monitors to find that specific point where everything lines up

perfectly (hopefully so, at least.)

On Xpress Pro, J-K-L trimming is an option. To activate it, select the Settings

Tab in the Project window. Double-click the Trim settings. The Trim Settings window

appears. Click the Features tab (see Figure 5.12) and select J-K-L Trim.

To J-K-L trim, enter Trim mode and press the J, K, or L key to move the transi-

tion point.

Remember, as you use the J, K, and L keys, the transition point moves with you.

J-K-L trimming, like trimming on the fly, is very powerful. It takes a bit of getting used

to, but it can produce rapid and precise results. The keys work the same as they would

during Source/Record navigation, save for the fact that they are actually trimming the

A and B sides of a transition as the media move.

Note: Keep in mind that the designers of the system recognized some of the pitfalls of using this method.

As a result,you can never completely get rid of an entire segment through J-K-L trimming.This is too bad, in

my opinion,because I think they are protecting me too much.If I “overrun”a segment through J-K-L trimming,

I can always undo it.And it would be great to use it as a tool for getting rid of unwanted segments.Anyway, if

you want to delete an entire segment,use Segment mode editing.If you find yourself confused by the amount

of trimming you’ve done during a J-K-L trim,undo.
