CHAPTER 4: THE TIMELINE ■
I Want My Filmstrip!
If you want the filmstrip track to appear in a Timeline using Xpress Pro,click the Timeline Fast
menu at the bottom of the Timeline window and choose Show Track
> Film.The filmstrip track
appears on-screen.Using this feature, you can show whatever tracks you prefer in Xpress Pro.
(Unfortunately, you cannot choose the tracks to display using Free DV.)
Track Panel Selector Characteristics
Each track panel selector has specific characteristics relating to activating, monitoring,
soloing, and—in the case of audio—scrubbing.
ACTIVATING
When a track panel selector is activated, it changes color. In Free DV, it changes from
charcoal to silver. In Xpress Pro, it changes from silver to purple. But what does “acti-
vation” do?
When you activate a track panel selector, you are indicating that it is active for
an edit. If the Source selector has no horizontally corresponding Record track panel
selector activated (see Figure 4.5), nothing is edited. However, if the Source track
panel selector has a horizontally corresponding Record track panel selector activated,
an edit will be possible.
If you’ve had any experience with patch bays, you probably follow this fairly
easily. If not, pretend you’re using one of those old phone line patch bays. You have
two active lines, but unless they are “patched” side by side, they do not connect.
Another way to activate or deactivate tracks is to hold the Alt/Option key and
click and hold the mouse. Notice the little rectangle at the tip of the cursor? Drag the
cursor either up or down across the tracks you want to activate or deactivate. This
process works with both the Source and Record tracks.
Figure 4.5 (left) The activated tracks do not hor-
izontally line up = no edit.(right) The activated
tracks horizontally line up = edit.
