phantom telecine A system that plays back
previously telecined films from a drive stor-
age array. Used for color correction on
motion pictures.
phosphors Materials on the screen of a cath-
ode ray tube that emit light to form an image
when irradiated by an electron beam.
picture leader Placed adjacent to SMPTE or
Academy leader, picture leader has informa-
tion written on it that consists of project
name, reel number, and running time.
pixel Contraction of “picture element.” A
single point of an image.
position indicator A vertical blue line that
moves in position bars and in the Timeline to
indicate the time location of the frame dis-
played in the monitor. In other applications,
frequently referred to as the play head or
CTI (current time indicator). Also known as
the blue position indicator, or BPI.
postroll A preset period of time during pre-
views when a sequence or other media will
continue to play past the out point before
pausing.
precomputes An effect stored as a media file.
Applications must precompute effects that
they cannot create during playback.
prelay The phase of audio postproduction
during which tracks are added to the master
before a final mix.
preroll The process of shuttling media to a
predetermined cue point (for example, six
seconds) so the media is stable when it
reaches a selected edit point, usually when
recording or digitizing from a video deck.
preview To rehearse an edit without actually
performing it.
primary color correction Color correction that
applies to every part of a video image, or to
every part of a video image that falls within
a defined range.
print A positive copy of a film negative.
process shot A shot photographed specifically
to be part of a special effect.
progressive media Media composed of whole
deinterlaced frames.
project Database that contains all your clips,
sequences, effects, and media file pointers.
project folder The folder containing an Avid
project.
protection master A copy or clone of a master
tape, usually made immediately after the
master has been recorded. It is used as a
backup if the master is damaged and also
can be used as a dubbing master.
pulldown A process in which extra fields are
added or “pulled down” during the conver-
sion of 24 fps material to 30 fps NTSC or
25 fps PAL videotape.
primaries The base colors used to make other
colors additively or subtractively.
radio frequency (RF) The high-frequency por-
tion of the electromagnetic spectrum used for
transmitting television and radio signals.
RAID Acronym for Redundant Array of Inde-
pendent Disks. A storage device standard
that helps to increase data speed and assist in
fault tolerance of data.
RAM Acronym for random-access memory.
Computer memory that is volatile.
random access The ability to move to a single
point instantly without having to shuttle.
