absorption The retention of light without
reflecting or transmitting.
Academy leader A leader placed at head of
release film prints, counting from 11 to 3.
As opposed to SMPTE (Society of Motion
Picture and Television Engineers) leader.
achromatic Having no color; gray, white, or
black.
A/D converter Acronym for analog-to-digital
converter. A device that transforms an analog
signal to digital samples.
adaptation The process of the human visual
system’s adjustment to light and color condi-
tions in which the eyes are exposed.
add edit A function on the Avid Control
palette that, when added between consecu-
tive frames in a sequence segment within the
Timeline, can separate segments into subsec-
tions for individual manipulation.
additive color A color formed by adding a
mixture of primary light sources: red, green,
and blue.
ADO Acronym for Ampex Digital Optics. A
video digital effects system manufactured and
sold by Ampex.
ADR Acronym for automated dialog replace-
ment in film. Also called looping.
AES/EBU Acronym for Audio Engineering
Society/European Broadcasting Union.
AIFF-C Acronym for Audio Interchange File
Format-Condensed. A sampled-sound file
format for audio data.
ALE Acronym for Avid Log Exchange: a for-
mat used for converting telecine files. Also
an application for converting telecine files
created by Avid Technology. ALE is used as
a log import format for Avid and other non-
linear editors (NLEs).
alpha channel An 8-bit, grayscale representa-
tion of an image that determines masked areas
for keys. Also referred to as hi-con, holdout,
cookie cutter, key channel, and mask.
ambience A production sound used where
there is no dialog to establish a setting. More
traditionally, ambience refers to outdoor
locations, and room tone refers to interiors.
Also referred to as room tone or presence.
A-mode A linear method of assembling an edit
decision list (EDL). In an A-mode EDL
assembly, the editing system performs edits in
the order in which they will appear on the
master.
analog A continuously variable electrical signal.
analog recording A common form of magnetic
recording, in which the recorded waveform
signal is transferred electronically via an ana-
log signal to media.
anti-aliasing A computerized process of digi-
tally smoothing the jagged lines around
lower-resolution graphic objects or titles. Anti-
aliasing is usually achieved by blending pixels.
ASA An exposure index defined by the Ameri-
can National Standards Institution. Originally
defined for black-and-white films, it is also
used for color films.
