CHAPTER 6: IMPORTING, EXPORTING, AND DIGITAL CUT ■
settings. At the top, there is also an Export As setting. Click on it to reveal all the dif-
ferent file types available. Choose QuickTime Reference. Once chosen, you’re given
some new options below. For now, let’s select everything, with the exception of Net-
work Referencing. Be sure to select Use Enabled Tracks so the right media references
will export. You’ll flatten the video tracks; insert black in the blank spaces; render all
effects; and go with your project settings for audio sampling, file format, and sample
size. You’ll also use the Avid codec.
You may have also noticed that there is a setting entitled Digital Mastering
(Xpress Pro only). The options in this pull-down menu are shortcuts to choosing the
export options already in the menu. There are two choices with this menu: Digital
Mastering and Fast Draft.
Digital Mastering flattens the video tracks, fills blank spaces in the sequence
with black, mixes down the audio tracks, and renders all effects. The other option is
Fast Draft, which gets the sequence out more quickly. It fills blank spaces with black
and flattens the video tracks. The only problem with Fast Draft is that if the effects are
not rendered, they will not show up in the resulting QuickTime.
When creating a QuickTime reference, one of these selections—Fill Spaces with
Black—is very important. If this isn’t done, the resulting reference file might have diffi-
culty playing back any blank spaces in your sequence. Always select this option.
Saving the Export Settings
Notice the Save As button at the bottom left of the Export Settings options (see
Figure 6.18). This button is not for saving the export, but rather a method to save
your export settings. Go ahead and click it to save these settings. You’ll notice that
this is now in your settings menu as one of your export options.
Drag-and-Drop Exporting
You can export using drag and drop much as you did with your importing previously.
First, activate the export settings that were created in the Settings tab of your Project
window. There should be a check mark next to those settings. Now, select the sequence
in its bin and drag it off to the desktop.
Another Way of Exporting: Send To (Xpress Pro)
With Xpress Pro, you can export a QuickTime reference (or for that matter, any type
of export) and then send it to another digital application as long as it is on the same
