CHAPTER 7: EFFECTS AND TRANSITIONS ■

Your system will vary depending on its configuration. Although it might seem

pointless to have the ability to enable or disable real-time effects, there are some trade-

offs to be considered. When you enable real-time effects

• You cannot output an NTSC/PAL video signal

• Your external NTSC/PAL monitor (if you have one connected) will be blacked out

Real-time effects are great for editing situations in which either you or a client

needs to judge the results of applied effects. After that is done, and the effects are all

approved, you still eventually have to render them before outputting a digital cut to video.

To enable or disable real-time effects, click the Toggle Digital Video Out button

on the Timeline. When the button is green, real-time effects are enabled. When it is

blue, they are not enabled.

Transition Effects

A transition type effect creates an effect between two clips in the Timeline. This can be

one of many different effects, including dissolves, wipes, and pushes. The effects are all

different, but they have many common characteristics, including the duration of the

transition and the position of the transition relative to the two adjoining clips.

When referring to a transition, the outgoing clip is commonly referred to as the

A side of the transition, and the incoming clip is referred to as the B side. When work-

ing with transitions, you have four choices for the positioning of the effect:

Starting At Cut When Starting At Cut is chosen, your transition effect will begin at the

cut point between the A and B side. Thus, a 30-frame transition would start at the cut

point and end 30 frames into the B side. If you’ve worked with linear video editing sys-

tems, Beginning At Transition is probably what you’re used to.

Note: If you are using Xpress Pro with the optional Mojo, the Toggle Digital Video Out button is not on the

interface because real-time effects are always enabled,and digital video out is also available.
