THE CAPTURE TOOL: DECK, CAMERA, AND TIMECODE CONTROLS
You do not add or subtract actual frames of video when using either drop or
non-drop frame timecode.
When you are logging a videotape without the actual tape in the machine, how
do you do it? If you are copying numbers from a paper log, you will need to
know whether it is recorded with drop or non-drop frame timecode. Here’s how
you can check:
On most modern video decks and cameras, the timecode display will indicate
drop or non-drop frame timecode by using a semicolon or a colon between the numbers,
respectively. For example, if your timecode display reads 01;00;00;00, the number is
drop frame timecode. If it reads 01:00:00:00, it is non-drop frame timecode.
Another way to determine frame code mode is to look at timecode on your tape
at the beginning of every minute (except the tens). If the code jumps two frames, it is
drop frame. If it doesn’t, it’s non-drop frame. Be sure to check the code on several dif-
ferent minutes to determine this correctly.
Unfortunately, some tapes will contain both drop and non–drop frame code, which
is unfortunate and should always be avoided. But if this problem does occur, you have
to log using the actual tape—otherwise, the log will not match the tape. If this occurs,
the system will prompt you that the timecode on the clips and the timecode on the tape
are in different frame code modes; therefore, there is a problem. This is easily avoidable
if you know the frame code mode of the tape when entering timecode information.
Because Avid will not allow for mixed frame code on the same tape, it will force
a new tape name for the section with a different frame code type. So tape F1, which
started as drop frame, will be forced to carry a second tape name by Avid when it
encounters non-drop code. Avid will warn you and then add the name F1NDF to the
tape registry.
Importing Logs
If the logs were created using a database and they are in an Avid-readable format, they
can be imported into a bin as follows:
1. Create or open a bin for the logged clips.
2. Under File, select Import. The Import menu appears.
3. Select Shot Log under the type of import.
4. Navigate to your log and select it. The log is imported.
Note: A good way to remember this is that the symbol for a semicolon has a descender that drops”down
(indicating drop frame),whereas a colon has no such descender (indicating non-drop frame).
