TRIM SELECTION
And that’s just the way an audience wants it: timed precisely according to the
needs of the program. But timing isn’t always intended to make you happy or to feel
concise. Witness the scene from Taxi Driver in which Travis Bickle is watching his
antacid fizzle in the glass. It just fizzles … and fizzles … and fizzles. It’s as if his mind is
fizzling right along with the antacid. It makes you queasy and uncomfortable. Now
that is good trimming.
Trimming is a method used to analyze a scene to display it the way it was
intended. When we trim, we look for the rhythm of the cut, the way in which it is dis-
played when taken in context with the adjacent cuts, and the editing errors on each
side of the cut. When we are trimming, we are attempting to fine-tune our sequence.
All the elements are there, but we must make the visual elements follow a pattern that
is pleasing to the eye.
Good trimming requires your focus on two elements: the up-close view, in which
we see the actual transition and how the trim occurs, and a macro view, in which we
look at the way a trimmed piece looks in context with the entire scene. The ardors of
trimming can be exhausting. Eventually, you might need to walk out for a cup of coffee
or a soda; then return to look at the scene again.
Many new editors find trimming a little overwhelming. It certainly can be. But
after a scene is trimmed properly, there is nothing more rewarding. You get excited
about your work and play it back for others with the “I did that” look on your face.
The actual process of trimming can also be a bit tricky at first, as you shall see.
Trim Selection
A transition or cut contains two elements. When trimming, the outgoing clip is referred
to as the A side, and the incoming clip is referred to as the B side. By adjusting the
length of the A and B sides, we are trimming.
There are a lot of ways to trim the cut. If the A side runs too long, we trim
backward, cutting off the excess audio and video. If it is too short, we trim forward,
extending the cut before transitioning to the B side. In some cases, we may want to
extend the visual of the A side over the audio from the B side (see Figure 5.1). This is
known as an L cut because on the Timeline it sort of looks like the letter L lying on its
side. Some editors might refer to it as a split edit because the audio and video are split
into parts.
