CHAPTER 2: CAPTURING ■
RCA connectors can also be used for audio. There are no strict conventions on
which types of RCA/Phono cables to buy, but I would recommend purchasing thicker,
more durable cables with solid connectors. Some manufacturers use “gold” cables,
which they insist produce a better signal. I have not seen any difference in signal repro-
duction between these and the regular metal connectors.
Audio Connectors
There are three major types of audio connectors that can be used with decks. Addition-
ally, these connectors come in two different forms: unbalanced and balanced.
UNBALANCED CONNECTORS
RCA/phono and

″ phono connectors (see Figure 2.11) are the two types of unbalanced
connectors. They are called unbalanced because they have only two lines to transmit the
audio signal: an earth line that grounds the signal, and a hot line that carries the signal.
With

/
4
″ phono connectors, there is one additional difference. Connectors with
one ring carry a single mono audio signal. Connectors with two rings carry stereo sig-
nals. Unless you have some need for running two signals through a single line, always
use mono connectors. Not all
1
/
4
″ phono connectors are unbalanced; some tip rig sleeve
connections can also carry balanced mono audio.
RCA phono connectors are common on consumer electronics and some pro-
sumer decks as well as cameras. The signal comes in a bit low at –10 dBu, so you’ll
want to adjust audio input levels on your Free DV or Xpress system when using these
connectors. If you have the optional Mojo, the signal is optimized.
BALANCED CONNECTORS
The three-pin XLR connector (shown in Figure 2.12) is an example of a balanced con-
nection. It carries three different signals (thus the three pins on the connector). These
three signals are shield (also called ground), hot, and cold. The cold signal is the same
as the hot signal, but it is turned upside down, or phase inverted. That’s probably a lot
more information than you need right now. Suffice it to say that a balanced connection
offers superior audio fidelity. Three-pin XLR connectors are common on professional
audio equipment.
