■ THE TOOLSETS
Record Track Panel The Record Track panel is where you show all the tracks that are
recorded in the sequence. It can also display additional tracks if you create them.
Timeline Window This big place at the bottom of the GUI is where the Timeline is dis-
played. When you have a Timeline, you can display your cut sequence graphically. We
also use this window for Timeline editing.
Timeline Editing Buttons These buttons enact a timeline-editing mode, in which you
can grab a hunk of your Timeline and move it to different places in the chronological
graph, which in turn changes your sequence. We also use this for deleting chunks of
material, juxtaposing them, even cutting and pasting.
The Toolsets
When you open a project, the GUI is displayed. Avid Free DV and Xpress Pro have dif-
ferent ways of configuring the GUI for more efficient operation. You could say that the
GUI is function-specific. When editing, you can set it up one way; when creating
effects, it can be configured another way, and so on.
These toolsets come preset to appear on-screen in a specific configuration, but
you can change them somewhat to make that configuration better for your monitor
and the way you like to work. The toolsets also initialize some functions that are spe-
cific to the type of work associated with the toolset.
The toolsets available on Free DV (shown in Figure 3.3) are as follows:
• Basic
• Source/Record
• Effects Edit
• Audio Edit
• Capture

Note: If you’re uncertain about the function of a button, check box,or other interface element, hover your
cursor over it and you’ll likely get a tooltip that provides some explanation.
