CHAPTER 7: EFFECTS AND TRANSITIONS ■
Background
The Background parameter is used to determine background colors when used with
Resize, Mask, Picture-in-Picture (PIP), and other similar effects in which the image is
scaled, and a background source is needed to fill the screen. The Background parame-
ter can also be used with transitional effects such as Dip To Color, in which a color is
needed to be defined as a source.
Much like the Border parameter, Background utilizes Hue, Saturation, and
Luminance parameters. It also uses a Color Selector icon and an Eyedropper.
Scaling
When the Scaling parameter group is present, the foreground image can be adjusted in
size using the X and Y axes. The X axis (Width) controls the horizontal size of the
image; the Y axis (Height) controls the vertical size of the image. The image scale can
be adjusted between values of 0 and 400, where 0 is no invisible and 100 is 100% of
normal image size.
Keep in mind when scaling images that you are working with video, so any
enlargement of the image causes serious degradation of the overall picture.
Below the X and Y axis adjustments is a Fixed Aspect button. When selected,
the Fixed Access button maintains the aspect ratio between horizontal and vertical axes
so that the image maintains its original shape and is simply scaled down or up in size.
Thus, when the horizontal (X) axis is adjusted, the vertical (Y) axis follows when this
feature is selected.
Note: Although both Scaling and Position parameters use different terminology, it is a good idea to get
used to the concept of X,Y, and Z axes when discussing effects. Those terms are used here, despite the names
used on the effect,to clarify for those users who are more “effects savvy.”
