CHAPTER 6: IMPORTING, EXPORTING, AND DIGITAL CUT
the tape continues playing. Mismatched levels are common in broadcasting, and they
don’t look particularly good. However, if you are inserting footage into the middle of a
sequence, make sure you do not have Add Black at Tail selected.
If you chose an insert or assemble edit, Xpress Pro has a pull-down menu that
determines where the digital cut will take place. The menu gives you three options:
Sequence Time, where the tape timecode matches the sequence timecode exactly;
Record
Deck time, where the digital cut will begin at the exact timecode where the
deck is parked
before you begin the digital cut; and Mark In time, which can be deter-
mined by marking an in point using the timecode registers near the bottom of the
Digital Cut tool.
Again, if you are remotely controlling the deck, there should be a menu next to
the right of the previous menu, which selects whether you are insert or assemble edit-
ing. If there is no menu here, you have selected Local mode. If the menu does not have
the Assemble option in it, you need to adjust your deck preferences accordingly to
enable it.
Below the pull-down menu is the custom preroll time (see Figure 6.30), which
might need to be adjusted to properly make an edit on your deck (again, only if
remote-controlled) and a DV Offset. The DV Offset is used when doing a digital cut
using FireWire. Sometimes, when doing a digital cut to DV-25, the audio and video do
not arrive at the same time. Adjusting the DV Offset will fix this problem. For your
deck, there is a predetermined offset built into the template. If you use a transcoder,
the chances of a delay are even greater. Many of the more common transcoder tem-
plates are listed in the deck configuration menus. When one is chosen, the default
offset is automatically selected.

Note: If you are doing NTSC video, be sure that the tape timecode and your sequence timecode use the
same frame code mode—that is, they both need to be either drop frame or non–drop frame timecode.
