■ THE CAPTURE TOOL: DECK, CAMERA, AND TIMECODE CONTROLS
through your Mac without dealing with any card installation. In Deck Configuration,
it is shown as the Direct choice. If you are using a hardware codec or a Mojo and you
want RS-422 control, you should choose either the Com 1/Com 2 selection (Windows)
or the Direct selection (Mac).
If your deck has neither RS-422 nor OHCI capability, you’ll need to control the
deck manually. In such cases, there is no need to configure a deck because the deck
cannot be controlled by the Avid system.
After you add your channel, it’s time to add a deck. Click the Add Deck button,
and the deck selection window appears. To properly select a deck, you must choose the
manufacturer first. For example, if your deck is a Sony DSR-11, choose Sony. When
the list of Sony configured decks appears, scroll down the list and select DSR-11.
If your deck is not listed under the manufacturer’s name, you might be able to
find the template on Avid’s website. Avid frequently adds or creates new templates
because new decks and cameras are manufactured frequently. Another option is to
select a generic deck, which follows standard protocols for controls of OHCI and
RS-422 controllers. It is not particularly sensitive to the full capabilities of a specific
deck, but it usually works well.
Deleting Deck Configurations
To delete a previous deck configuration, do the following:
1. Go to your Project window and click the Settings tab.
2. Select Deck Configurations.
3. Click the deck and Shift-click the channel. Or lasso them both in the Deck
Configuration tool.
4. Press Delete.
Selecting Decks through the Capture Tool
An easier method of selecting a deck is to automatically configure it through the Cap-
ture tool (although this doesn’t always work, particularly with FireWire decks). At the
bottom of the tool underneath the deck shuttle slider is a window that identifies the
type of deck that the system believes is being used. If this is not the correct deck, click
it. A pull-down menu appears (see Figure 2.33). From the pull-down menu, select
Autodetect. The system polls the deck to determine which template best fits it. In many
cases, the Autoconfigure might not present the best selection because some DV devices
do not respond to the Autodetect command. In other words, some decks and cameras
will not reveal their make and model when polled by the system. If you know that a
template for your deck exists but Autoconfigure did not select it, configure it manually
as previously described.
