RS-170A Created by the Electronic Industries
Association (EIA), RS-170A specifies the tim-
ing of scans and blanking required to decode
color signals.
RS-232C Created by the Electronic Industries
Association (EIA), RS-232C is the standard
interface for connecting serial devices.
RS-422 Created by the Electronic Industries
Association (EIA), RS-422 is an enhancement
of the RS-232C standard. It allows for higher
data rates and an extended line length. Used
by nonlinear and computer editing systems to
control videotape recorders and other devices.
rushes The results of a single day of shooting.
Usually refers to workprint made from a sin-

videotape transfer of the footage. Referred to
as rushes because of the traditional method
of shooting, developing, and printing quickly
for editorial use. Same as dailies.
R–Y One of the color difference signals in an
analog component color system of the
National Television Standards Committee
(NTSC) video standard. The signal formula
is as follows:
R–Y = 0.701R (red) – 0.587G (green) –
0.114B (blue)
safe action area, safe title area The regions of
the video image considered safe from crop-
ping for either the action or on-screen titles.
